Our Sustainability
Our Ethos
Incorporated throughout our company ethos and touching all facets of the business is sustainability. From the outset of a project, even at tender design, we consider how we will approach the logistics and methodologies to reduce any potential negative impacts and promote positive impacts. This can include the nature and type of plant and equipment we may use and the fuel used for said plant and equipment.
Considering specific site logistics and processes, particularly when done in advance, can greatly help to promote sustainable methods. Reducing the number of vehicle movements for deliveries, using companies that use electric vehicles and streamlining suppliers are all examples of such site logistics and processes.
The application of the waste and carbon hierarchies’ forms part of both our company and project considerations.
Our Re-Use
We will always endeavour to maximise opportunities for re-use where possible both at site and company level. The size and nature of our company means that across the board we are able to have systems and processes in place for us to know the plant, equipment and consumables we have available and therefore be able to utilise re-use rather than buy brand new items and to also be able to share amongst sites and projects.
This can range from 5-ton excavators through to chairs, microwaves and fridges that are used as part of the welfare set up. Although there are service and testing regimes in place, the culture fostered within our company ensures that all employees look after plant, tools and equipment so we are able to maximise the re-use of these items.
Re-use initiatives within Salter Demolition have recently expanded much further. When taking on a new site there are often many opportunities for reuse, whether that be of existing furniture for the welfare area or a recent development where the raised access floor tiles are collected, cleaned thoroughly and then re-stacked for re-use elsewhere.
Re-Use Example
We now offer services to clean used raised access floor tiles, store them on site ,or alternatively off site, and then transport to the required destination.
If the tiles are required in their original un-cleaned state, then we are also able to facilitate this. This is just one example of how Salter Demolition is helping contribute towards the circular economy.
Our Innovation
Throughout the company, all our employees actively research and share findings on new tools, equipment and techniques that would further our sustainability endeavours.
This can be from a more energy efficient piece of equipment to looking at solar powered monitoring equipment as well as generators. We are currently undertaking trials with our plant to switch to HVO fuel which is created from hydrotreating previous vegetable oils and animal fats with a view to using zero diesel on site.
Our Recycling
We acknowledge that demolition works by its nature will mean that there will be a waste removal element involved. However, as part of our Environmental Objectives, Salter Demolition sets itself a target of recycling 97% of waste removed from site.
Since our inception in 2016 we have always achieved or exceeded this target. We work with waste contractors whose sustainability objectives are aligned with our own and recycle a high percentage of waste which is then re-used in other products.
Our Communities
Seeking engagement with the communities within the vicinity of both where our head office is located and where our projects are located is something that is integral to our company ethos.
Community engagement is of great importance to us, both encouraging positive engagement and making sure to pre-empt any potential impacts to those in the surrounding areas to the project site and mitigate such impacts.
The word ‘demolition’ can often come with some negative connotations and we hope through early engagement and information that we could put people’s minds at rest about exactly what the works will involve. In addition, we always look to become a part of the local community for the duration of our works from employing local labour, where possible to supporting local shops and cafes and procuring goods locally, where possible.
We aim to engage with the community and leave a positive impact of our works, the client and the wider construction industry.
Our Knowledge
We use our ISO14001 accreditation combined with BREEAM principles to form the foundations of all our environmental and sustainability processes and procedures at both a site level as well as head office level.
Our company environmental and sustainability targets form part of our day to day activities and are key considerations within our method statements for undertaking works.
We have an extensive in house knowledge base where individuals have qualifications including IEMA Practitioner, BREEAM Associate, GradIEMA, Carbon Management and Carbon Reporting and offsetting. Our latest addition to the team has a degree in Geography, specialising in Sustainability – helping to bring relevant understandings and up to date knowledge to the team.
Health and Wellbeing
Looking after health and wellbeing is an integral part to Salter Demolition’s ethos. Looking after both physical and mental health is something we help encourage and facilitate for all staff whether they be office based or site based. We have three mental health first aiders who help provide support, information and are able to signpost anyone who is struggling or in need of help.
They also help provide resources for those on site, an environment which can sometimes be a difficult place to open up about how you are feeling and start the conversation.
As a company we are doing everything possible to try and reduce mental health stigma and provide environments where people feel able to talk about how they are feeling.
